AI Certificate 22/03/2025

The UK university that I work at as a Lecturer in Computing user experience (UX) design has started a new initiative to promote AI. They are evaluating an online  training certification mini-course. Students and staff can go through a set of text-based materials with supporting videos that have closed captions. This is followed by a traditional multiple choice question (MCQ) quiz. A traditional eTraining instructional design. The assessment is not meant to be ‘open book’, so you should be using your short-term recall of the lesson to answer the questions.

This got me thinking about how AI can be applied in an innovative way to this learning design. Can I copy the question and answer choices into an AI generator to solve the quiz? Is this cheating?

What is the purpose of this training? To verify my understanding of AI content? To motivate me to want to embrace using AI in the university lessons?

How can we actually use AI in the assessment process to apply our knowledge and skills to solve real-world scenarios?  Here is the real challenge.

This video aims to provide support to entering content into a UK university dissertation report document. The structure for the report used in the video is based on one university template. Your university may have different headings, so be sure to check your assessment description. The intent of this resource is to guide you to entering content into the dissertation report so any claims made are backed by evidence. Each section of the report should help map the project SMART objectives through the narrative evidence to support the conclusions. Please do email abasiel@gmail.com subject: Generic Dissertation Guide with any questions. I am happy to collaborate. – Yours, Dr Anthony Basiel

Learning Assessment Turing Test: Human or AI? 23/01/2025

I’m working with the York SJ Computing Science team on a British Council proposal. You can see the details at https://tinyurl.com/BC-STEM2025.
We are considering another AI related project for assessment review

a) Give the AI the assessment learning outcomes and marking rubric to assign a grade. Compare to the human marks.

b) AI v. human – both feedback text to students to do a ‘Turing test’. Which is human?

We are working on the research case study model to provide the student test groups with text samples of both AI and human generated marks and feedback. Using an online survey (human/AI composed) we will see if the students can spot the human feedback from AI comments. The lectures will determine if the AI marking falls in range with the human marks.

If you would like to collaborate on this project or join in the publication of the results, please contact me on abasiel@gmail.com

The difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer: Reflections on a British Council project proposal 15/01/2025

The quote, ‘ the difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer.’ was originally from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II to show success in seemingly insurmountable odds. I was given the challenge to: a) write a British Council (BC) project proposal for the going global partnership STEM project1 b) compile a budget to train 100 STEM Tutors – all in 10 days!

The first step was finding a UK university that would be the host. This was not easy as most UK HEIs (higher education institutions) don’t have a lean management structure to make quick decisions (especially in early January).
Next, I worked through the BC forms and budget guidelines linking to the global mission statement. I learned from past international projects that links to the core objectives of the funding agency is vital.
Lastly, this is not a task that can be done in solitude. You need a supportive team that can bring their tacit professional knowledge, skills and capabilities to the table. I found that ‘mission impossible’ crew at York Saint John, UK.
This story is still in progress, so watch this space…..
