The difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer: Reflections on a British Council project proposal 15/01/2025

The quote, ‘ the difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer.’ was originally from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II to show success in seemingly insurmountable odds. I was given the challenge to: a) write a British Council (BC) project proposal for the going global partnership STEM project1 b) compile a budget to train 100 STEM Tutors – all in 10 days!

The first step was finding a UK university that would be the host. This was not easy as most UK HEIs (higher education institutions) don’t have a lean management structure to make quick decisions (especially in early January).
Next, I worked through the BC forms and budget guidelines linking to the global mission statement. I learned from past international projects that links to the core objectives of the funding agency is vital.
Lastly, this is not a task that can be done in solitude. You need a supportive team that can bring their tacit professional knowledge, skills and capabilities to the table. I found that ‘mission impossible’ crew at York Saint John, UK.
This story is still in progress, so watch this space…..
